The annual contest that most parents are dying to win for their baby (newborn - 3 years) is the American Baby Cover Contest. American Baby is a sister publication to Parents Magazine. Being a father of 2 boys, I didn’t know much about this publication until reading up on the contest. The magazine describes themselves as the “#1 brand for expecting and new moms… providing nearly 6 million women with everything they need to know about pregnancy, family wellness, juvenile products, beauty, home and more.” Well, that works for me. We have a baby on the way in our family. Spencer is due Jan 17, 2009. Can you imagine 6 million potential people could see our cutie pie Spencer?

Let me get back to my review. The cover model contest starts in mid-July and ends in mid-September with the winning cover photo appearing in American Baby in the December Issue. At the time of this writing, the 2008 contest entry period has just recently ended. There were 29,497 photos entered in the contest for 2008. You can view the top rated photo entries to see the competition and American Baby actually lets you submit one photo a day during the submission period. Tip: this is not well known so take advantage of this as the 2009 contest kicks off. It’s hard to capture the best moments so your chances are that much greater if you enter many photos.

Judy Nolte, editor in chief of American Baby, said, “Here’s how it works: Take a picture of your baby discovering something new for the first time. It can be anything from eating ice cream to playing with a musical instrument to touching a furry pet. Upload your photo along with a short caption describing your child’s moment of discovery before September 15th.”

Norma Blatto, publisher of American Baby, added, “Five winners will receive an all-expense-paid trip to New York City to be photographed for the December American Baby issue. One lucky Grand Prize winner will appear on the December American Baby cover. Entry photos must be taken after January 15, 2008, and children must be under age three.”

One nice thing about this contest is no purchase is necessary to enter or win unlike many others I will be reviewing on My Baby Photos! Some basic requirements are:

  • photos must be .jpeg or .bmp image formats and cannot exceed 3 MB
  • photos must be taken by the entrant
  • photos must be unpublished
  • may not have won any prize or award already

The winner has not been announced yet for 2008 but you can read all the Contest Official Rules by clicking on Moments of Discovery. Early bird gets the worm. Be prepared for next years contest.
