There is no doubt that one of the most important photos you will ever take of your child is his or her newborn photo. There are even professional photographers that cater to just these moments such as Our365. Our365 provides parents with high quality and unique in-hospital baby portraits and makes it easy to share them with friends and family. Your child will never look the same as he or she did during those first few hours or even days of life. In fact, you may very well look back upon those pictures later and wonder how your child ever grew to look the way he or she does now!

Getting a great newborn picture within the first few days of your baby’s life can be a bit tricky, particularly if your baby was born with medical problems. Even for those that are born perfectly healthy, however, it is important to keep your newborn bundled up and warm as he or she gets adjusted to the new environment. In addition, a newborn child is quite worn out from the birthing process and tends to sleep a great deal during the first few days. Therefore, you will need to make some allowances when taking photos and to accept the fact your new little bundle of joy will be just that most of the time - a large bundle of blankets, hats and mittens with a little person lost in there somewhere. Still, this doesn’t mean you can’t get creative with your photos!

The Obligatory Bundled Picture

It is inevitable that you will have a picture or two of your newborn all bundled up in a blanket and a little hat. After all, he or she will be dressed this way for the first several hours after being born. But, you can make the photo even more touching by including family members in the photo such as the one shown below.

This photo does an excellent job of showing the newborn baby’s face with his eyes wide open. The over-the-shoulder view is a great angle for this type of photo, as it allows the father to hold the baby up for a great photo opportunity while also expressing the tenderness the father feels toward his new pride and joy. Even though you can’t see all of the father’s face, you can see enough to know he is proud and smiling from the inside out.

The Backward Approach

After taking the obligatory bundled picture that shows your precious newborn’s face, you might want to try taking a photo that utilizes the backward approach as in the picture below.

This photo does more than capture the frailty and small size of the newborn, it also creates a tender moment as the baby’s head is cradled by her daddy’s loving hand. With the focus being on the back of the little girl’s head and her father’s hand, it is also a great way for you to remember just how soft and thin her hair once was!

Admiring Little Parts

In addition to getting photos of your new baby’s little face, you should also take plenty of photos of his or her little body parts. You will be amazed by how tiny your baby’s hands and feet look when compared to yours. But, as your child grows older and you look back at the photos of how small he or she once was, you will be even more amazed. The photo below, for example, does a nice job of showing the detail in the newborn’s hand while maintaining good composition in the photograph.

If you are looking for a photo that will truly highlight how small your newborn’s hands are, however, you might want to try a photo such as the one below.

If you can’t get your newborn to grasp onto someone’s finger like the baby in the photo above, don’t worry!  Just simply rest your newborn’s hand on your hand and you will still be able to get an idea of how tiny those little fingers and hands really are.
