This is part 5 of our 28 part series Capturing Special Moments. Every other week, Shannon will share photos and commentary from the key moments in your child’s development- from infancy thru early childhood. These are memories every parent will want to treasure for years to come. Follow along and don’t forget to share your special moments on our My Baby Photos Facebook group.

One of the most exciting moments in the first year of your child’s life will be his or her first steps.  Some little guys and gals seem to go straight from rolling around to walking without ever bothering to crawl, while others my prefer staying on all fours for a little longer before taking those first timid steps.  Regardless, you will likely call up at least one friend or relative in order to brag a little after your tot takes his or her first steps.  Wouldn’t it be great to also get this special moment caught on film?  Even if you don’t get the very first step captured in a photo, be certain to take plenty of pictures of this exciting time in your child’s life.  You will be amazed as you watch your child transform from a cautious, wobbly walker to someone who takes each step with confidence and excitement!  Below are a few photo ideas for capturing those first steps in a photo.

The “Look at Me” Photo

Capturing that look of pride on your child’s face will help you create a truly magical photo moment.  In the photo below, you can sense the excitement this little guy feels about taking those first steps.  After all, this moment is just as special for your child as it is for you - your little guy or gal has just opened up a whole new world to explore!

Of course, in some cases, a great picture is achieved when all of the elements just happen to fall into place at the right time.  The photo below not only manages to capture baby’s first steps, it is also provides plenty of great blackmail opportunities later in his life!

Getting a Helping Hand

Everyone needs a helping hand from time to time - and this is certainly true when it comes to helping your child learn how to walk.  Taking a photo of mommy or daddy helping your little one take those first steps can create a truly touching photograph.  The photo below is made even more moving with the interesting tone.

Taking photos of your child as he or she gets a helping hand can also lead to capturing that very first step.  You never know when your child will step away from those helping hands and finally take off on his or her own, such as in the photo below.

You might also want to consider experimenting a bit with perspective when taking these helping hand photos.  The photo below does a great job of bringing the viewer into the child’s world as she takes those first steps.

The Fall

Every child takes a few falls as he or she learns how to walk.  Often, the photos of the fall can be just as adorable as the photos of the actual steps.  In the photo below, for example, you can almost hear the little girl saying “Wow!  This sand is so gross!  I need to hurry up and get this walking thing under control.”

Putting It All Together

Photos of your child’s first steps create the perfect opportunity for putting together a photographic collage.  More than likely, those first steps will also result in a wipe out, which may be followed by some tears.  In the collage below, the range of emotions the child experiences during this exciting moment are perfectly captured.

From determination to excitement when the first step is taken, then moving on to amusement by the fall and then sadness (which is all made better by a little love from mom).  This collage brilliantly shows the ups and downs of learning how to take those first steps.
