Let it Snow and Salvage Great Photos of Your Kids
After the snow fell all night, we woke up to a blanket of white. Like any good mom with a camera, I whipped my kids out of bed, threw them into some snow clothes and shuffled them outside for a “photo op”. There is something about a big snowfall right before Christmas that makes me so happy I break out into a very bad version of “I’m dreaming of a White Christmas”
My youngest was not impressed at all with the fact that Mommy was too busy snapping pictures and laughing to help him up! I did eventually, I promise! He was having fun, I assure you. He just had a little trouble getting up with the big fluffy jacket, snow pants and boots. The snow was very light and fluffy too, so getting a good areas to put his hands was nearly impossible. Funny though!
I did have some issues with lighting. The snow is so bright it was very hard to get the right adjustments and well since I couldn’t feel my toes, I wasn’t spending a lot of time fiddling with my settings. That’s what Photoshop is for right!? This is a digital world and I am a digital girl! With over 300 hundred photos taken in 20 minutes, there had to be a few good ones and a few I could salvage!
Photoshop to the rescue! This photo would have been perfect if I had the flash on but I forgot, yes it’s true! I wasn’t sure exactly what I was going to do to brighten this picture up so, I took the easy way out.
- I opened up in photoshop.
- Duplicated the background image, creating a new layer called background copy.
- Right clicking opens a menu of choices. I went up to Blend Options.
- With that open, I picked Screen in the blend mode dropdown menu.
The result was just what I needed. Just enough to brighten the photo without washing it out or getting too fancy. His rosy cheeks and dimples visible for everyone to “awwww” over. I let the kids play outside for 20 minutes or so until I was starting to get really cold. It was time to go inside for some hot cocoa and warm up watching Christmas movies. The risk of frostbite was so worth it! It will only hurt for a week or two right? Catching memories in the making is forever!

Brandi,
Your snow pictures are too dark because you have to overexpose when shooting snow and check your histogram to make sure your are getting WHITE… see this post: http://mybabyphotos.net/what-the-heck-is-a-histogram-baby-photography/

Couldn’t agree more. Scooping up your old baby and kiddie photos is a great way to pass the day and they also make great affordable gifts too! Grandparents and Christmas ornaments are ideal!
