So Many Choices! Embellishing Your Scrapbook Pages
There’s far more to scrapbooking than just papers and cute photos of your little one. Half the fun is decorating your page with some of the millions of embellishments out there.
You have quite a selection to choose from when it comes to yearbook embellishments. Today, we’ll look at a few of your options and how you can use them.
Ribbons and Borders
Borders add a nice finished touch to a page and can be easily incorporated into your design. You’ll find that you can use anything from fall leaves like the example above (using the Autumn at Last! kit from Digi Scraps), to snowflakes or simple stripes in colors that match your theme.
Ribbons are another border option. If you’re scrapbooking in a paper album, you can easily add some pretty ribbon to a page, using adhesive dots. It will lend some texture to the layout.
For either ribbons or borders, don’t forget to think outside the box. They don’t always have to go at the edges of the page. Why not use a fun border to separate two photos? Or add a second paper across the lower third of the page and a border to mark the difference. Use your imagination and you’ll be sure to come up with plenty of fun ways to use borders.
Stickers
By far one of the most popular scrapbooking embellishments, stickers let you add instant character and interest to a page. As long as you make sure that the stickers you use are acid-free (for paper albums), anything goes. In this example, I’ve used mostly pre-printed phrases as stickers to enhance my Fall theme. The stickers are from the Scarecrow Set at Digi Scraps; the papers are from their tile selection which allows you to make your own scrapbooking papers.
Some fun ways to use stickers include creating your own borders with tiny images, adding relevant decoration to a page and even right on a photo. For example, if your baby is holding out her hand in the picture, why not put a sticker gumdrop on it?
Stickers are a great way to add to the theme you are already trying to establish and they also let you put together a beautiful scrapbook page very quickly. No need for lettering, just use some pre-printed sticker phrases!
Buttons and Other 3D objects
There’s no reason to stop at stickers and borders . . . why not opt to make your pages a little more three dimensional? Anything that is relatively flat and not too heavy can be stuck into an album.
Buttons are particularly popular. You’ll notice that I used them in the layout of this article. Though these were virtual buttons, you can use the real life kind, just as well. Most people have a collection of buttons on hand that would go well with a scrapbooking endeavour. There are also a lot of novelty buttons that can be used, though you may wish to cut the loops on the back off before placing them in an album.
Other 3D objects that might be used in an album include brads, paperclips, charms, jewelry, yarn and thread, embroidered designs and mementos such as tickets. These can all contribute to the overall page design, but they are also invaluable for bringing back memories in the years to come.
There’s no rule about what can and can’t be included in a scrapbook, but you will want to avoid anything that is pointy or not acid-free, since these items can damage your photos. Of course, you can always use the digital version, which won’t do any harm at all!
