In the first part of this two-part holiday series, we discussed taking holiday photos that capture the joy and fun of the season.  In this second part, we will explore photo ideas for capturing the true meaning and spirit of Christmas.

The Beautiful Angel

In this angelic photo, the use of the white matting coupled with the baby’s pale skin creates a truly angelic quality.

The soft lighting, the child’s innocent stare and the stark contrast of the red and white in this photo all work together to create a truly memorable photo.

Sweet Innocence

Of course, the holiday season is a time of innocence and caring.  The photo of the baby below beautifully illustrates this sense of sweetness and love.

Just as with the previous photo, the use of only magenta and white in this photo helps create a look of purity.  But, with this photo, the fact that it is Christmastime is not proclaimed on a bib saying “Baby’s 1st Christmas.”  Rather, it is beautifully illustrated by the blurred Christmas tree in the background.

Making Use of Props

When it comes to babies, you can dress them in just about everything and they will look absolutely adorable.  Of course, you have to walk that fine line between being corny and being cute.  This photo teeters on that line, but manages to pull it off!

This is a cute idea that can be easy to replicate at home, as the quality of the photo is determined more by the cuteness of the outfit and props than by the actual photographic elements.

The Awed Child

If you want to take using props to the next level, the photo below is an excellent example of what you can do with them.

Grace with Christmas Lights

This amazing photo combines a number of different photographic elements in order to create a truly unforgettable photo.  The black background, for example, helps make the pale skin of the child and the bright colors of the ornament, the lights and the hat stand out.  In addition, the Christmas lights surrounding the child create an interesting glow on the child’s naked skin.  Of course, the nudity of the child helps add to the innocence of the child, while the fact that the child is looking down in apparent wonderment at the ornament helps to express the feelings of awe that so many of us feel at this time of the year.

Keeping it Simple

Sometimes, the seemingly simplest photos are the ones that leave the greatest impact on the viewer.  The photo below, for example, does not utilize a number of props and is deceivingly simplistic.

In reality, any photographer knows that capturing a photo with this type of clarity and expression can be quite difficult.  Nonetheless, the faint lights in the background express the mood and message perfectly - Christmas time is and always will be a time of reflection, joy, togetherness and wonder for all who allow the spirit of the season to enter their minds and souls.
