Here’s a quick and easy tutorial to make your photos pop using selective color and make you look like a photographic pro!

  1. Open photoshop.
  2. Open the photograph you wish to use.

  3. Make a duplicate layer of the image (Layer –> Duplicate Layer).

  4. Now it’s time to desaturate your duplicate layer. Make sure your background copy layer is highlighted in the layers bar. Then go to Image –> Adjustments–> Hue/Saturation.

  5. Slide the saturation bar all the way to the left

    Your image will now be black and white. You may also adjust the brightness/contrast to taste (Image –> Adjustments–> Brightness/Contrast).

  6. Next make a layer mask (Layer –> Layer Mask–> Reveal All)

  7. Now for the fun part - adding selective color. Make sure the background copy layer is highlighted in the layer bar. Then click on your eraser tool in the tool bar. Adjust your brush size accordingly and selectively erase over the areas you wish to have color.

    For higher detail work zoom in and use a small brush size.

  8. Save your file and step back and enjoy your work!
